Summary provided by MFC’s (Acting) Imam Sami Zaharna

Ghusl

  1. Ghusl (washing the body of the decease) is mandatory in general for every known Muslim.

  2. Ghusl ideally should be done by water without any barrier.

  3. In situations where an infection can spread from the diseased body, such as in COVID-19 situation, it is recommended to forgo the water ghusl and instead perform “Tayammum”. Tayammum can be best translated as “virtual ghusl” that can be done without pouring any water and on top of appropriate protective gear

Kafan (wrapping the body)

  1. Similar to Ghusl, it’s a right upon us to place the body of the decease in new fresh cloth.

  2. However, if that is not doable due to infection risk, then the body can be buried in the protective gear it came in.

Janaza

  1. Janaza is mandatory and a right upon us for any deceased Muslim.

In situations like now, it’s permissible to perform the janaza at the location of the grave with limited numbers. Due to COVID, currently in MD, 10 or fewer people are permitted to congregate.
