Youth Life Skills Virtual Series

MFC is very excited to announce a new virtual series of workshops, “Youth Life Skills”, with Br. AbdulSaboor Khan. Brother AbdulSaboor was born and raised in the area and has been a part of the greater DMV community, including ICM, MCC, and our very own MFC. A graduate of University of Maryland, College Park, and a current volunteer fire fighter and EMT in Gaithersburg, he is an avid outdoor and woodworking enthusiast.

The “Youth Life skills” workshops consist of 12 sessions geared to teaching valuable skill sets to our youth. These sessions will give our youth the opportunity to learn about a variety of topics, including:

- Fire planning and Emergency preparedness

- Safely handling and using different power and hand tools

- Basic carpentry

- Introduction to Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM)

- And much more

Series info: 

Duration: 10-12 sessions, currently online, will transition to in-person, when the health authorizes recommendations permits.

Dates and tentative session plans: First Friday night at 7:30PM of the month

February 5th: Fire planning, appropriate fire safety around the house, disaster preparedness and making emergency kits

March 5th: Tools 101

April 2nd: Carpentry 101 - introductory course on basic cutting, gluing, and jointing techniques

June 4th: Carpentry 102 - continuation of the Carpentry 101, and begin a project

Fees: $50 for all sessions (participants will be responsible for buying their supplies)

Age: 11-19

Class size: 15 students

Some of the Supplies that the youth will learn how to and will use in their projects are:

  • Philips (cross-shaped) and Slotted (flat-head) screwdriver

  • Hammer

  • Pliers

  • Sheers

  • Pencil, Permanent marker, measuring tap

  • Long level

  • Speed square and Carpenter square

  • Different kind of Saws (Hand, Circular, Jig, Miter, table)

  • Drill, Spade bits and Drill bits
